The Way of Change

〔易 / 不易 / 变易 — the simple · the constant · the changing〕

The interplay of yin and yang: this is the Way. The endless generation of life: this is Change.

Rooted in plainness, it foresees the hazardous; rooted in simplicity, it clears the obstruction.

Script cannot exhaust speech, nor speech exhaust meaning; thus images are established to render meaning complete. The benevolent perceive benevolence, while the wise perceive wisdom.

乾,元亨利贞,君子终日乾乾夕惕若;

Qian represents what is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and firm. The superior man is active and vigilant all the day, and in the evening still careful and apprehensive.

Heaven moves with strength; the noble one accordingly never ceases to strengthen himself. The earth’s disposition is receptive; the noble one accordingly bears all things with generous virtue.

Reverence straightens the inner life; righteousness squares the outer conduct. Vast and great: reaching afar, nothing resists it; drawing near, it is tranquil and correct. Straight, square, and great—without deliberate practice, nothing fails to prosper.

The noble one makes the perfecting of virtue his conduct, visible day by day. The toiling and modest one labors but does not boast, has merit but claims no virtue; he keeps his tool within, and waits for the moment to move; moving without hindrance, he goes forth and gains; he sees the first stir and acts, and returns before straying far.

When exhausted, it changes; changing, it opens through; opening through, it endures.

Knowing the goal, he reaches it; knowing the end, he brings it to a close; he knows advance and retreat, survival and ruin, and never loses his rectitude.

In safety, not forgetting danger; in survival, not forgetting ruin; in order, not forgetting disorder. Reducing to avert harm; expanding to foster benefit.; a small punishment for a great warning.

Short & Precise Version in English

Yin and yang in play: the Way. Life begetting life: Change.

Rooted in plainness, it reads the risk; rooted in simplicity, it clears the path.

Script can’t exhaust speech; speech can’t exhaust meaning. Build images to capture the intent. The benevolent see benevolence; the wise see wisdom.

Qian: Primal, penetrating, advantageous, and firm. The leader drives all day, vigilant through the night.

Heaven is strong: the leader endlessly self-corrects. Earth is vast: the leader carries all with virtue.

Reverence centers within; righteousness squares without. Vast and deep: afar, unstoppable; near, still and true. Straight, square, vast—effortless mastery.

The leader enacts virtue daily. The humble worker toils without boasting, holds his tools, and waits for the pivot. Moving unimpeded, he gains; spotting the seed, he acts and never strays.

Exhausted, it shifts; shifting, it opens; opening, it endures.

Knowing the goal, he reaches it; knowing the end, he concludes it. Knowing advance and retreat, survival and ruin, he stays true.

In safety, remember danger; in survival, remember ruin; in order, remember chaos. Cut to protect; add to expand; small corrections prevent great falls.
