The Way of the Dao

〔有无 · 为 · 成 — Being & Non-being · Action · Accomplishment〕

The Way that can be spoken is not the constant Way; the name that can be named is not the constant name.

Non-being names the origin of heaven and earth; Being names the mother of the myriad

Non-being makes a thing serviceable; Being makes it beneficial.

Through the constant Non-Being, one seeks to perceive its profound subtleties. Through the constant Being one seeks to observe its structural boundaries.

Reversal is the movement of the Way; weakness is the use of the Way.

It gives life but does not possess, acts but does not presume, nurtures but does not rule, accomplishes its work but claims no credit.

Do nothing, and nothing is left undone; through selflessness, the self is fulfilled.

The pursuit of knowledge is daily accumulation; the pursuit of the Way is daily unlearning.

Know yourself but do not display yourself; love yourself but do not exalt yourself.

Strip away the extreme, the superfluous, and the ego.

From compassion comes courage; the courage that dares not act ensures resilience.

From frugality comes breadth; know contentment and suffer no disgrace, know where to stop and meet no danger.

Not daring to be first in the world, one can become the head of affairs.

The Way is never full; therefore it endures the wear, forever unfinished.

The true is the utmost of pure sincerity. Use the mind like a mirror: neither seeing off nor welcoming, responding but not storing.

Attain utmost emptiness, hold fast to stillness. Empty, yet inexhaustible; the more it moves, the more comes forth. Through settling it slowly clears; through anchoring it slowly comes to life.

Act without acting, work without working; deal with things before they arise, order them before they fall into disorder.

The world’s hardest things must be done while they are easy; its greatest, while they are small.

Govern the state with rectitude; wage war with the unexpected.

No calamity is greater than meeting no worthy match.

Being as peacefully through death as through birth, and nowhere will prove fatal. Being as careful at the end as at the beginning, and nothing will fail.

The high takes the low as its foundation; the soft and weak overcome the hard and strong.

Blunt the sharpness, untangle the knots, soften the glare, become one with the dust.

Dwell in the thick, not the thin; in the fruit, not the flower.

Simple & Precise Version in English

Being & Not-being

The Way that can be spoken is not the constant Way; the name that can be named is not the constant name.

Non-being names the origin of heaven and earth; being names the mother of all things.

Non-being provides the utility; being provides the material advantage.

Ever non-being, to perceive its mystery; ever being, to observe its bounds.

Reversal is the motion of the Way; weakness is its function.

Doing

Giving life without possessing, acting without claiming, nurturing without ruling, accomplishing without taking credit.

Do nothing, and nothing is undone; selfless, the self is fulfilled.

Pursuing knowledge: daily accumulation; pursuing the Way: daily unlearning.

Knowing oneself, not displaying; loving oneself, not exalting.

Stripping away the extreme, the extravagant, the arrogant.

From compassion comes courage; daring not to lead ensures survival.

From frugality comes breadth; knowing contentment, no disgrace; knowing where to stop, no peril.

Daring not to be first in the world, one becomes the leader of all.

The Way is never full; thus it endures, forever unfinished.

Truth is absolute sincerity. Use the mind like a mirror: greeting nothing, welcoming nothing, responding without storing.

Done

Attain ultimate emptiness, hold fast to stillness. Empty yet inexhaustible, moving ever more. Settling, it clears; anchoring, it revives.

Act without acting, work without working; address things before they arise, govern before disorder.

The hardest things begin easy; the greatest things begin small.

Govern with rectitude; wage war with the unexpected. No calamity greater than having no match.

Peaceful while flowing through life and death, no fatal ground. Careful at the end as at the beginning, no failure.

The high takes the low as base; the soft and weak overcome the hard and strong.

Blunt the sharp, untangle the knots, soften the glare, blend with the dust.

Dwell in the substance, not the surface; in the fruit, not the flower.

The Way of Emptiness

Observing into freedom, in the depth of practice, saw that the five aggregates are empty, and so crossed beyond all suffering.

The five aggregates are all empty.

Form is not other than emptiness, emptiness not other than form; form is emptiness, emptiness is form. So too are feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness.

All things bear the mark of emptiness: neither increasing nor decreasing, neither defiled nor pure, neither arising nor ceasing, neither coming nor going, neither one nor many, neither permanent nor cut off.

Like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, a shadow; like dew, and like lightning.

All is made by mind alone, and the five aggregates all arise from it. All arises through causes and conditions; lacking self-nature, it is therefore empty.

In emptiness there is no form, no feeling, perception, volition, or consciousness; no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind; no form, sound, scent, taste, touch, or object of mind; no realm of sight, on through to no realm of mind-consciousness. There is no ignorance and no end of ignorance, on through to no aging-and-death and no end of aging-and-death.

There is no suffering, no origin, no cessation, no path; no wisdom, and no attainment.

Because there is nothing to attain, the mind is without hindrance; without hindrance, there is no fear.

Grasping at no appearance, one abides thus, unmoved.

Let the mind arise while dwelling on nothing; if the mind dwells nowhere, it is freed here and now. Far removed from delusion and dreaming, it reaches final Nirvāṇa.

Right view, right intention; right speech, right action, right livelihood; right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.

Clear discernment of real, joyous engagement in wholesome qualities, profound patience and pure conviction, tranquility of body and peace of mind.

All formations are impermanent; all defilements are suffering; all realities are without self; all appearances are without appearance — and that non-appearance is the true appearance. Do no evil, uphold all good, purify your own mind.

Boundless kindness beyond condition, great compassion of one shared body, immeasurable sympathetic joy, and the equanimity that holds all as equal.

Simple & Precise Version in English

Awake and free, deep in practice: see emptiness, cross suffering.

The five aggregates are empty.

Form is emptiness, emptiness is form. Feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness are the same.

All things bear the mark of emptiness:

neither arising nor ceasing, neither defiled nor pure, neither increasing nor decreasing.

Like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, a shadow; like dew and lightning.

Mind creates all; the aggregates arise from it. Born of conditions, lacking self-nature, all is empty.

In emptiness: no form, feeling, perception, volition, consciousness; no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind; no form, sound, smell, taste, touch, thought. No realm of senses, down to no consciousness. No ignorance, no ending of it; down to no aging and death, no ending of them.

No suffering, origin, cessation, path; no wisdom, no attainment.

With nothing to attain, the mind has no hindrance; without hindrance, no fear.

Clinging to no appearance, unmoved.

Dwelling nowhere, let the mind arise; dwelling nowhere, complete liberation. Far beyond delusion and dreams, reaching final nirvana.

Right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.

Discerning the real, longing for virtue, profound conviction, light in body and calm in mind.

All formations are impermanent; all defilements are suffering; all phenomena are selfless; all appearances are formless — and the formless is true form. Do no evil, practice all good, purify the mind.

Boundless unconditional love, universal compassion of one body, immeasurable joy, and absolute equanimity.

The Way of the Confucians

Wisdom — the Way of Knowing

Know others, know the root, know where to stop.

Knowing where to stop, one gains stability; stable, one can be still; still, at peace; at peace, able to deliberate; deliberating, able to attain.

Study broadly and hold firm to your purpose; question closely and reflect on what lies near at hand.

Learn and practice in season; shown one corner, come back with the other three; tap both ends and exhaust the matter.

Not opening the way for one who is not eager; Not lifting up one who is not struggling to speak.

Insisting on nothing, ruling out nothing.

No imposed will, no absolutes, no obstinacy, no ego.

In youth, guard against lust; in your prime, against strife; in age, against acquisitiveness.

Be watchful over what is unseen, wary of what is unheard.

Each day I examine myself on three points.

Seeing the worthy, aspire to equal them; seeing the unworthy, look within.

When self-examination finds no fault — and when you err, do not shrink from mending it.

Seek it in yourself; seek what lies within your power; seek what furthers attainment.

The noble one is watchful when alone; careful to the end and mindful of the distant; single of mind and bent of will.

Without thought for the far, trouble is near.

With preparation one stands; without it, one fails.

Nothing is more visible than the hidden, nothing more manifest than the minute.

Unseen, yet manifest; unmoving, yet transforming; without acting, yet accomplishing.

Benevolence — the Way of Love, befitting people

The benevolent love others; benevolence is the human heart.

The benevolent has courage, and his speech is measured; observe a man’s faults, and you may know his benevolence.

The benevolent is loyal and reciprocal; the noble one is not a vessel.

Do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself.

Wishing to stand, he helps others stand; wishing to succeed, he helps others succeed.

Even in the small and partial there can be sincerity; seek with a sincere heart, and though you miss, you will not be far.

Righteousness — the Way of Love, befitting affairs

For nothing, against nothing — he sides with what is right.

In food he seeks no fill, in dwelling no ease; earnest in action, careful in speech, he draws near those who have the Way, to be set right — and acts when the heart is at peace.

First act on your words, then let them follow; demand much of yourself, little of others.

Firm but not blindly rigid; dignified but not contentious; at ease but not arrogant; inclusive but not partisan; harmonious but not conforming; sociable but not factional.

He speaks only in season, laughs only when glad, takes only what is right; first the hardship, then the gain; first the work, then the reward.

Raise the upright over the crooked, and the crooked are made straight; repay injury with uprightness, and kindness with kindness.

Ritual Propriety — the Way of Respect, respecting people

Let the ruler employ his ministers with propriety, and the ministers serve their ruler with loyalty.

In high place, not arrogant; in low place, not disloyal; he thinks not beyond his station, but acts within it — and in no situation is he not himself.

Mild, upright, courteous, temperate, deferential; reverent at home, respectful in his work, loyal in his dealings.

Lead with rectitude; rectify yourself and make no demands of others.

Trustworthiness — the Way of Respect, respecting affairs

Let your words be loyal and true, your conduct earnest and reverent; be reverent in affairs, and trustworthy.

Give your full strength, offer your whole self, and be true to your word.

In planning for others, be loyal; with friends, be true. Befriend the upright, the sincere, and the well-informed.

Simple & Precise Version in English

Wisdom — the Way of Knowing

Know others, know the root, know where to stop. Knowing where to stop brings repose; repose brings tranquility; tranquility brings peace; peace brings deliberation; deliberation brings attainment.

Study broadly and hold purpose firm; question closely and reflect near at hand. Learn and practice in season; shown one corner, infer the other three; tap both ends to exhaustion.

Unlock only the eager; unblock only the struggling.

Insisting on nothing, ruling out nothing.

No pre-conception, no absolute, no stubbornness, no ego.

In youth, guard against lust; in prime, against strife; in age, against greed.

Watchful over what is unseen, wary of what is unheard.

Examine myself daily on three counts. Seeing the worthy, aspire to equal them; seeing the unworthy, look within. When self-examination finds no fault—and when you err, do not shrink from correcting it.

Seek within yourself; seek what is in your power; seek what furthers growth.

The leader is watchful alone, mindful of the end and distant, single-minded and resolute. Without far sight, near trouble looms. Prepare and stand; unready and fall.

Nothing more visible than the hidden, nothing more manifest than the minute. Unseen yet manifest, unmoving yet transforming, inactive yet accomplished.

Benevolence — the Way of Love, befitting people

The benevolent love others; benevolence is the human heart. The benevolent has courage, and measured speech; observe faults to know benevolence.

The benevolent is loyal and reciprocal; the leader is no a tool. Do not impose on others what you yourself reject. Wanting to stand, help others stand; wanting to succeed, help others succeed.

Even the small has sincerity; seek with a sincere heart, and though you miss, you are close.

Righteousness — the Way of Love, befitting affairs

For nothing, against nothing — align with what is right.

Seek no full belly, no easy home; earn in action, care in speech, draw near the Way to be corrected—and act when the heart is still.

Act first, speak after; demand much of yourself, little of others.

Firm but not rigid; dignified but not proud; at ease but not arrogant; inclusive but not cliquish; harmonious but not uniform; social but not partisan.

Speak in season, laugh in joy, take in righteousness; first hardship, then gain; first work, then reward.

Raise the upright over the crooked, and the crooked straighten; repay injury with uprightness, kindness with kindness.

Ritual Propriety — the Way of Respect, respecting people

Rulers employ ministers with propriety; ministers serve rulers with loyalty. Above, not arrogant; below, not rebellious; acting strictly within one’s station, at ease anywhere.

Mild, kind, courteous, temperate, deferential; respectful at home, reverent at work, loyal to all.

Lead with rectitude; rectify yourself and demand nothing of others.

Trustworthiness — the Way of Respect, respecting affairs

Let words be loyal and true, conduct earnest and reverent; revere affairs and be trustworthy.

Give your all, keep your word.

In service, be loyal; with friends, be true. Befriend the upright, the sincere, the learned.

The Way of Change

〔易 / 不易 / 变易 — the simple · the constant · the changing〕

The interplay of yin and yang: this is the Way. The endless generation of life: this is Change.

Rooted in plainness, it foresees the hazardous; rooted in simplicity, it clears the obstruction.

Script cannot exhaust speech, nor speech exhaust meaning; thus images are established to render meaning complete. The benevolent perceive benevolence, while the wise perceive wisdom.

Qian represents what is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and firm. The superior man is active and vigilant all the day, and in the evening still careful and apprehensive.

Heaven moves with strength; the noble one accordingly never ceases to strengthen himself. The earth’s disposition is receptive; the noble one accordingly bears all things with generous virtue.

Reverence straightens the inner life; righteousness squares the outer conduct. Vast and great: reaching afar, nothing resists it; drawing near, it is tranquil and correct. Straight, square, and great—without deliberate practice, nothing fails to prosper.

The noble one makes the perfecting of virtue his conduct, visible day by day. The toiling and modest one labors but does not boast, has merit but claims no virtue; he keeps his tool within, and waits for the moment to move; moving without hindrance, he goes forth and gains; he sees the first stir and acts, and returns before straying far.

When exhausted, it changes; changing, it opens through; opening through, it endures.

Knowing the goal, he reaches it; knowing the end, he brings it to a close; he knows advance and retreat, survival and ruin, and never loses his rectitude.

In safety, not forgetting danger; in survival, not forgetting ruin; in order, not forgetting disorder. Reducing to avert harm; expanding to foster benefit.; a small punishment for a great warning.

Short & Precise Version in English

Yin and yang in play: the Way. Life begetting life: Change.

Rooted in plainness, it reads the risk; rooted in simplicity, it clears the path.

Script can’t exhaust speech; speech can’t exhaust meaning. Build images to capture the intent. The benevolent see benevolence; the wise see wisdom.

Qian: Primal, penetrating, advantageous, and firm. The leader drives all day, vigilant through the night.

Heaven is strong: the leader endlessly self-corrects. Earth is vast: the leader carries all with virtue.

Reverence centers within; righteousness squares without. Vast and deep: afar, unstoppable; near, still and true. Straight, square, vast—effortless mastery.

The leader enacts virtue daily. The humble worker toils without boasting, holds his tools, and waits for the pivot. Moving unimpeded, he gains; spotting the seed, he acts and never strays.

Exhausted, it shifts; shifting, it opens; opening, it endures.

Knowing the goal, he reaches it; knowing the end, he concludes it. Knowing advance and retreat, survival and ruin, he stays true.

In safety, remember danger; in survival, remember ruin; in order, remember chaos. Cut to protect; add to expand; small corrections prevent great falls.
